In this special interview feature, we speak to Julie Yim, Co-Founder of Lilin+Co to learn more about the inspiration behind the brand, her advice to other budding entrepreneurs as well as gift recommendations if you are looking to craft cosy moments through the gift of candles.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey in kickstarting Lilin+Co.
I’ve always been a creative person by nature and my former work experience as a journalist has led me to interview many inspiring successful individuals.
Inspired by their success, I wanted to venture out on my own and the opportunity came when I attended my cousin’s wedding abroad and received soy candles as a wedding favour. I found that there was a gap in the market at that time back in 2016 and decided to start Lilin+Co as a side hustle.
2. Lilin+Co is known for its unique scent combinations that are loved by many. What does the process and formulation of your scents look like?
As we’re very hands-on with the business, we’ve had plenty of face time with loyal customers which in turn has helped us to identify their scent preference.
Occasionally, we will decide to do something fun like releasing a Popcorn scent during last year’s lockdown for everyone to create a cinematic experience at home.
We have a mix of staple customer favourite scents and will try to rotate among few other scents to cater to as many people as possible.
3. Lilin+Co has grown to be such a significant brand in the artisan scene locally. What is your advice to budding entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their businesses by offering handcrafted products?
Spend time fine-tuning the quality of your products first and your customers will come to recognise and appreciate your products.
4. Where do you see Lilin+Co’s business growth in the next 5 years?
We hope to expand our product range in the home fragrance category and export our products abroad.
5. Many of our WISHFUL gift kits include scented candles as we believe they are incredibly versatile. In your opinion, why do you think candles make amazing gifts?
There is a sense of emotional connection when one receives candles as a gift. We all know how scent has the ability to transport us to a special time or place in our lives. Every time you light up a candle, you’ll also think of the person who gifted it to you.
6. If someone is looking to select a candle for their loved one, what are some of your tips to help them select the suitable scents that would suit them best?
Firstly, we’ll identify the gender of the receiver and narrow down the scents from there. Next, we’ll find out what are their interests or activity they like to indulge in and try to match a scent for them. Otherwise, if all else fails, you can’t go wrong with our ultimate bestseller scent, the Neroli & Ylang Ylang.
7. What are some of your personal favourite scents from Lilin+Co’s collection?
My current favourite right now is our Eucalyptus & Pine scent. The scent reminds me of nature and camping in the woods. It’s fresh and puts me in a zen mood after a long day.
