Hi, Nadirah! Thank you for being a part of our International Women's Day feature! Could you introduce yourself so our readers can get to know you better?
Thank you for inviting me! I wear many hats depending on the projects I am working on. I am a photographer, producer and director. I am the co-founder of Layar Lucida, a women-led creative production company where we work on projects from commercials to music videos. I am also the co-founder of Exposure+ Photo. I am basically passionate when it comes to photography and anything visual.
What are some of your struggles working in a male-dominated industry?
Though I have had amazing experiences working with both men and women over the years, I cannot deny that sometimes I still encounter instances where I have to constantly prove myself to make myself heard, not being taken seriously, being spoken over and my thoughts and ideas being dismissed. Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe that things like those I just mentioned still happen in 2022.
A common misperception about you and what you do VS what you really do!
I am not sure what people think I do but it is definitely not easy, I will say that much! However, when it comes to photography, I pour my heart into them!
What does gender equality look like to you?
When equality between genders exists, and this includes rights, opportunities, responsibilities and power. There is still a clear imbalance and more work needs to be done.
A word of empowerment to all the women out there.
You matter and your voice matters. Together, let’s bloom.
